The Farm Team!
We have rescued many dogs this year, but we also have horses, llamas, donkeys, alpacas, pigs, sheep, goats and a ram. We have a phenomenal Farm Team led by our Farm Manager, Alicia, and this month, we want to spotlight their hard work and dedication.
Our farm team works tirelessly in all types of weather to care for these special animals and provide them with exercise, enrichment and affection. Working with farm animals is second nature for this team, and they make sure that ours get routine vet exams, farrier visits, shearing and medications. Currently, the team is getting the horses ready for summer. They spend hours grooming off the old coat of hair, followed by bathing off the winter dander. The horses that enjoy being ridden start getting slow walks for a few weeks, then hill work, to build the muscles needed to stay strong.
30 acres of the Salem property is in the process of getting crossed fenced to move our senior horses and ponies by the end of the month. And the goats are now in a new play area that was recently built just for them. With wildfire season just around the corner, the farm team also helps with evacuation drills and catastrophe planning. Together with our amazing facilities team, they also design and maintain the grounds where the livestock live, and collaborate on various projects that benefit the entire organization. Next month, I will highlight our Companion Team, which works primarily with the dogs and cats.
